IT Top Tips
Here at 360ict, we our proud to have resolved hundreds, in fact thousands of problems, faults, situations and even a few disasters. So here is our current top ten "hindsight" snippets that may have either avoided some of them or made the resolution easier and more cost effective. Some of thee may seem obvoius, but we know from experience that in our busy working lives these can be easily over looked.
Top Tip 1
Remote Back Ups - You must ensure that you, the Client are holding any encryption codes or keys required to retrieve data. These will be rarely held or accessible to the back-up service provider, nor the secure data hosts and WILL be needed to recover data.
Top Tip 2
Excel - includes the ability to automatically save your work periodically. To ensure this is set up go to the Tools menu and look under "Options".
Top Tip 3
Word - will also automatically save your document for you in the event that you aren't a frequent saver. You can make sure this feature is turned on in Word by clicking on Options in the Tools menu and checking the mark in "Save Autorecover Info Every nn". Be mindful the this feature does not save over the original. Rather it saves a recovery file.
Top Tip 4
As well as ensuring that your data is backed up, it is imperative to any DR situation that an electronic back up of your actual "system settings" is also accessible. This is needed to ensure a speedy restore of your network to its operational capability. The easiest way to do this is via your ICT support company; however, be aware that securing these settings may not be part of your standard tape and on-line back up routine.
Top Tip 5
Anti - Virus - It is imperative that as well as having an up to date anti-virus program installed, along side you need a policy to ensure that no other media ( USB's, Laptops, Flash Drives, Servers, Desktops etc. ) are connected to the network without first being checked and included in the AV system first.
Top Tip 6
Facebook and other Social Networks - Identity thieves are using these innovative tools, Never post your full date of birth, nor your full address. All it takes is for one of your online friends to leave a public workstation logged in and there could be two of you !
Top Tip 7
If you are managing a web site, reduce spam by not advertising your own email address. Always use an info@ or even better a data collection form.
Top Tip 8
If sourcing equipment for your own organisation, avoid systems that come pre-loaded with Windows Vista. In order to network, they will require an expensive upgrade.
Top Tip 9
There are a number of very intuitive on-line tools available at very low cost. Normally free introduction, and then a nomlnal pay as you go plan. Here are a few for you to consider.. The real FAB with these is that they are very simple to use, which means you can get them operational very quickly and reap the benefits.
